Why Estates Take So Long, and the One List That Helps
2026-10-21

Families are often surprised by how long an estate takes. It rarely takes a few weeks, and it can run well past a year when property or complications are involved. Official offices and banks can be busy, and each step waits on the one before it.
A lot of the delay is information, not law. Someone has to find out what the person owned, what they owed, and who needs to be told. When that information is scattered across drawers, old emails and half-remembered phone calls, every step takes longer.
The most common slow-downs we hear about:
- Documents that are missing or incomplete - Not knowing which bank, insurer or pension fund to contact - Not knowing who the attorney or accountant was - A policy nobody knew about until months later - Family members chasing the same information separately
The one list that helps. It has four parts: what you own, what you owe, what you have insured, and who to call. Next to each item, write where the proof is kept. It does not need to be perfect, and it does not need to hold any passwords or account numbers.
Add three names. The person who holds your will, your attorney or accountant, and the person you trust to coordinate.
Share where it is, not what is in it. Your family needs to know the list exists and how to reach it when the time comes.
Keep it current. A list that is two years old causes almost as much trouble as no list.
None of this removes the official steps. It makes each one faster, because the answers are already in one place. That is exactly what MyLegacyLivesOn is designed to hold, and to release to your chosen people when you can no longer share it yourself. Our video on estate timelines is shown below this post.
Start with ten minutes. Take the free 2-minute readiness check to see where your family would be stuck today, or create a free account and begin your list.
General information, not legal advice. This is a planning summary, not a legal document. Bring it to a qualified estate lawyer to formalize.
